Rant: The difference between my first Orion shot and my new one is just wild
Honestly, my blurry phone pic from 2018 looks like a smudge compared to the crisp detail I got last night with a basic DSLR and a tripod, so what's the one piece of gear that made the biggest jump in quality for your photos?

My old Canon T3i from 2012 still takes great shots. The gear matters, but learning how to actually use it made the real difference for me. Spending a year just figuring out manual settings did more than any new lens.

Oh man, I totally hear you on that! I actually just read an article on DPReview that talked about how the T3i is still a totally capable camera even by today's standards, and how a lot of the magic is just knowing your tools. It's wild how much time people spend chasing the newest sensor when the composition and lighting are way bigger factors (not to mention the photographer's eye). Your workflow of learning manual settings for a year is honestly the kind of dedication that probably made you a way better shooter than someone who just upgraded bodies every two years.

Wait, doesn't the gear actually matter a lot less than people say? You're right, @max415, learning manual settings is huge. But I'd push back a little and say even a year might be overkill. Once you get the basics of how shutter speed, aperture, and ISO work together, you can learn by doing real shoots. Sticking with old gear forces you to be creative, which is the real skill. New cameras just make it easier to fix mistakes, not take better pictures. What's the longest you spent trying to learn one specific setting?
