My mount stripped a gear mid shoot and I lost 40 minutes of Andromeda frames
Two Fridays back I set up in the yard around 9pm and got maybe 40 good minutes of the Andromeda galaxy before the tracking just died. The scope kept drifting and every frame after that was streaked, so about 25 shots were garbage. Turns out a little plastic gear inside the mount had worn smooth, and I never grease that part because I did not know it was there. I got it apart on the kitchen table with a tiny screwdriver and a phone light, and the teeth were just gone. For now I am shooting shorter 30 second subs and stacking more of them to hide the drift. Has anyone here had a mount fail like this, and is it worth trying to find a replacement gear or do I just start saving for a new mount?
