My camera mount slipped during a 4 hour exposure of the Orion Nebula

I was out in the desert near Joshua Tree last night and the whole shot is just a blurry streak now. Has anyone found a good way to lock down a tripod on uneven ground?

Oh man, that's the worst kind of heartbreak. I've had good luck hanging my camera bag from the tripod's center hook for extra weight. It's not perfect, but it helps fight the wobbles.

My friend swears by paige86's bag trick, but he also wedges rocks under the tripod feet.
