My backyard photo of the Orion Nebula got 500 upvotes on another site

I was just stacking exposures from my old DSLR and a basic tracker, not expecting much. Woke up to that number and it honestly made me want to try for a more difficult target, like the Horsehead Nebula. What's a good 'next step' object after M42 for someone with similar gear?

Honestly, chasing a harder target right now is a bad move. That 500 upvotes was probably just a lucky break with a bright, easy object. The Horsehead is way too faint for basic gear, you'll just waste nights getting a noisy gray blob. Stick with M42 and try to get even more detail, that's the smart play. Jumping to a harder target after one win is how people get frustrated and quit the hobby.

Man, it's just a hobby. If someone wants to try for the Horsehead and gets a gray blob, so what? They'll learn something. Not every night has to be a perfect win.
