Finally spotted what everyone else misses in nebula photos

I've been browsing this sub for about 6 months now, and I keep seeing people post gorgeous shots of the Orion Nebula with these crazy vibrant colors. But here's the thing, almost nobody adjusts the black point properly. The background sky should be dark gray, not pure black or light gray. I only realized this after using a calibration tool on a photo I took with my Canon T7i. Now I look at other people's shots and the stars look harsh and the nebula loses that soft glow. Is that something anyone else obsesses over or am I being too picky?

Spent a whole weekend once convinced I'd invented a new way to process astro shots. Turned out I just forgot to clean my lens.

Lens dirt has a way of making things look artsy until you realize it's just smudges. Might work as a filter if you market it right, though.
