Warning: I ignored the free water test guy for 8 months and it cost me $1,200

This guy knocked on my door in Boise last spring offering a free water test and I figured it was a total scam to sell me a softener. Tbh I blew him off twice, and my wife finally let him in on the third visit just to get him off the porch. Turns out our hardness was 14 grains per gallon, which explained the crusty faucets and why our dishwasher died in December. We dropped $1,200 on a softener plus a new dishwasher, and the dishes come out spotless now. Has anyone else had one of those door to door guys actually be right about something?
