TIL most people forget to check the humidity before they seal stained wood

I was helping a buddy refinish his deck last weekend and he slapped on the polyurethane right after a rainstorm. The next day it turned all cloudy and bubbly. Now I check with a cheap hygrometer first, saved me from redoing my own kitchen table last month.

Right there with you, @finleyh89 learned that lesson the hard way too. My first try at a dining table looked like a foggy mess because I didn't think humidity mattered.

Used to think that was overkill but you're totally right about humidity.

Hmm I don't know @finleyh89, are we sure this isn't a bit overblown? I mean yeah humidity matters but people act like it's some kind of magic bullet that fixes everything. I've had plenty of setups in less than ideal conditions and they worked fine. Sure maybe you lose a tiny bit of quality but is it really THAT noticeable to the average person? Seems like one of those things that gets blown way out of proportion because the internet loves to make everything sound CRITICAL.
