My sister told me 'you can ask for help before you're drowning' and it stuck with me

We were just talking on the phone about work stuff, and I mentioned feeling swamped with a client's questions. She said that exact line, and I mean, I've always waited until I was totally stuck to ask for anything. It hit different because she's right, I could have just emailed my boss two days ago when I first got confused. Now I'm trying to ask sooner. Does anyone else have a hard time speaking up before things get bad?

Wait, you only ask for help when you're totally stuck?

Oh please, @holly_walker76, asking for help early is a skill I clearly never learned. I treat it like a last resort, like calling a plumber only after the basement is fully flooded. By the time I speak up, I've usually made the problem ten times worse with my own weird fixes. It's a pride thing, and it's a terrible system. I'm basically the reason "too little, too late" is a saying.

Honestly that sounds like a solid survival skill to me. Figuring things out on your own builds a different kind of know-how, even if it gets messy. Maybe the weird fixes are just part of the process.
