My $180 bike repair turned into a 3 week nightmare, what do I do?
Took my bike to the shop on 4th street for a simple tune up and they said the rear wheel needed a full rebuild, $180. Three weeks later, they still have it and keep saying parts are delayed, but when I called the manufacturer they said the part ships in 2 days. Is this normal for bike shops or did I just pick a bad one?
Sad to say this kind of runaround is pretty common at smaller shops, and the part delay line is often just an excuse. Reminds me of when my truck needed a water pump and the mechanic swore the part was on backorder for weeks, then I called the dealer myself and they had six of them sitting on the shelf. The shop was either too lazy to order it or had my truck parked out back while they took in easier jobs first. Three weeks for a wheel rebuild is way too long, that is a one day job once the parts land. Call them, tell them you know the part ships in two days, and give them a deadline to finish or hand the bike back. If they stall after that, ask for your money back and name them in a review, because holding your bike hostage over a part that takes two days to ship is not normal.
