I used to plan every single meal down to the gram, now I just throw stuff together and hope for the best

Back in 2021 I was that person with a color coded spreadsheet for every breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the whole week. I would weigh out 4 ounces of chicken breast and measure exactly 1/2 cup of rice on a food scale. It drove my roommate crazy because I'd block off the kitchen from 6 to 7 pm every night like it was a surgery. Then one Tuesday I came home exhausted from a gig where I'd spent 8 hours fixing a client's logo in Illustrator and I just couldn't be bothered. I opened the fridge, grabbed some random veggies, leftover pasta, and a jar of alfredo sauce, mixed it all in a pan, and it was honestly the best meal I'd had in months. Now I maybe plan one or two meals out of the week and the rest is just whatever looks good at the moment. Has anyone else just completely abandoned their meal prep system after a random good experience with chaos?

Not having a system at all is just asking for trouble down the road. I get that you had one good meal by winging it, but that doesn't mean chaos works long term. Every time I've tried the "throw stuff together" method, I end up eating a sad bowl of cereal at 10pm because nothing in my fridge goes together. There's a middle ground between a color coded spreadsheet and total anarchy. Maybe try keeping a loose plan for 3 or 4 dinners a week and leave the rest open. That way you're not chained to a schedule but you also don't end up with a kitchen full of random ingredients that never get used. Your future self will thank you when you're not staring at a half empty fridge wondering what to eat.

Yeah @reesea49 I read somewhere that having a loose framework works better than total chaos or rigid planning.
