Got into a debate about self-checkout vs cashier lines last week

I was at the grocery store on Tuesday (the one on 3rd street) and the self-checkout line was 8 people deep while a cashier was standing there with no one. So I went to the cashier and this guy behind me said I was wasting time because the self-checkout is faster once you get to it. I timed it - took me 4 minutes with the cashier and the self-checkout line barely moved in that time. So which side wins for you guys? Is it worth waiting in a shorter self-checkout line just to avoid talking to someone?

Proves people will queue for anything if they think it's the smart choice.

Those self-checkout machines are a real headache half the time. The guy behind you was just wrong, plain and simple. People get so hung up on the idea of speed they don't see the reality right in front of them. A cashier knows what they're doing, and a machine just sits there blinking at you when you need help. I'll take a real person over a robot any day of the week.

Right there with you. Self-checkout is a gamble, not a guarantee. Here I am, scanning three items, and the machine tells me to wait for assistance because it doesn't recognize my produce. Meanwhile, the cashier is ringing people through like a machine. @the_charlie nailed it - we all just stand in whatever line looks like the smart choice, even if it's just for bragging rights about not talking to anyone.
