A 5th grader told me my classroom playlist was 'giving 2010 vibes' and now I let students pick the music on Fridays

I used to just play the same indie rock station I've had since college, but after that kid called it out I switched to letting each class submit one song for the week. Has anyone else had to completely surrender their music taste to a bunch of 11 year olds?

My 4th graders last year voted and now we do "Throwback Thursdays" where they pick songs from when they were babies like 2018-2020 lmao. I had to set a hard rule though no mumble rap or songs with explicit lyrics because one kid tried to submit something with the f-bomb. Also make a group playlist on Spotify so they can add throughout the week and you can review before Friday hits. Saved me from hearing that one Minecraft parody song on repeat.

The Spotify playlist idea is genius because it keeps you in control but still lets them feel ownership. I'd add a rule about no songs over 4 minutes too, otherwise you end up with some 7 minute epic that kills the vibe for the rest of the day. Also, having a "no repeats for 4 weeks" rule stops that one kid from submitting the same song every single Thursday. Do you let them vote on the order or do you just shuffle it?
