Update: I spent $150 on a proper site survey before my dig and it saved a major find from being damaged.
The ground-penetrating radar flagged a dense object right where we planned to trench, so we shifted the excavation grid and uncovered an intact ceramic vessel instead of shattering it with a shovel. Has anyone else had a survey pay off like that, or is it usually a waste of money for smaller projects?

Wish my cheap surveys found more than old soda cans.

Honestly, that's a perfect example of why spending a bit up front can save a ton of hassle later. It reminds me of getting a home inspection before you buy, you just never know what's hidden. Tbh @lisaf38, I feel you on the soda cans, but this shows sometimes you do hit the jackpot. It's like a gamble, but one that protects the stuff you're actually there to find.

Only $150 for a full site survey? That's shockingly cheap. Most quotes I've seen for GPR start at like a grand for a small area. You got incredibly lucky with that price and it still found something major.
