Update: A volunteer at the Cahokia dig told me 'you found that potsherd because you were patient, not lucky' after I spent an hour on my knees in the same square meter.

That single sentence from her in the Illinois heat last July changed how I approach every grid now, so what's a small piece of advice that's stuck with you on a site?

Honestly, that patience over luck idea sounds nice but sometimes you just get lucky.

An hour in one square meter at Cahokia in July, that's some serious dedication. I would have melted into a puddle after twenty minutes. That volunteer really nailed it though, patience over luck is the real secret.

Reminds me of a dig where we found a single bead after three days.
