Spent 3 hours at a dig site in Arizona convinced I found a fossil, turns out it was a barbecue briquette
I tried the 'lick the rock' trick my professor mentioned to spot bone vs stone and it worked perfectly, but the briquette tasted way better than it should have, so has anyone else found modern trash at a supposedly pristine site?

I stopped trusting the lick test after I tried it on what turned out to be a chunk of old concrete with a cigarette butt fused to it. Now I just look for the little bubbles and glassy bits, since real bone never has those.
