My professor told me to ignore surface finds at a dig site in New Mexico, but that's exactly where we found a 300-year-old trade bead.
Has anyone else had a mentor's advice totally backfire in the field?

My old boss said to skip washed-out areas, but that's where we found the best flint.

Heard a geologist on a podcast say that exact thing, @lindaowens. They argued that water movement can sort and concentrate good material, leaving the junk behind. Your old boss's advice seems like it would make you miss the good spots. Makes you wonder how much gets overlooked by following the standard rules, right?

That geologist was talking about gold, not flint.
