I had to pick between digging a new trench or cleaning a pottery shard pile at the Athens site.
I chose the trench and found a bronze coin from 300 BC, but my friend thinks I should have documented the shards first. What would you have done?

Seriously? You made the right call. A coin is a solid find, shards are just broken pottery. Your friend is overthinking it.

Honestly, I read an article about how context from shard layers can date a whole site. But a solid coin find is huge for getting people excited and funding. You made a good practical choice.
