Appreciation post: field notebook indexing went from chaos to color coded in one week
For years I just scribbled everything in one spiral notebook. Site notes, trench logs, artifact sketches, random measurements. Looked like a bomb went off in a stationery store. Last month I dug up a 1930s bottle dump outside of Reno and had to cross reference my own chicken scratch from three months prior. Took me two hours to find the right depth notes.
So I switched to a binder with colored tabs. Red for stratigraphy, blue for finds, green for photos, orange for measurements. Cost me like 12 bucks at an office supply place. Now I can flip to the week I need in seconds. Plus I started dating every page with the actual time of day too, not just the date. Sounds dumb but it helps when you're logging multiple units.
Anyone else got a system for keeping field notes straight? I'm curious if people go full digital tablet or stay old school paper like me.
