A retired farmer in Iowa showed me something about arrowheads I never expected

I was out near a creek in Johnson County last fall, poking around a freshly plowed field. An older gentleman walked up and asked what I was doing. I told him I was looking for points or flakes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out this tiny broken arrowhead, maybe an inch long. He said he found it in that same field back in 1963 and carried it ever since. He told me most people walk right past the small stuff because they want the big fancy points. That stuck with me. Has anyone else had an old timer share a lesson like that in the field?

Have you ever noticed how in every hobby or skill, the little things teach you more than the big ones? I think about that all the time when I'm working on my truck. You can buy a fancy new engine part but if you don't pay attention to the tiny rusted bolt or the worn out hose clamp, the whole thing falls apart. That farmer was right, we get too focused on the flashy stuff and miss the quiet lessons hiding in the small stuff.

You said "the little things teach you more than the big ones" and I agree with that, but I think that farmer was saying something a bit different. He was pointing out that people miss the small stuff entirely because they're looking too hard for the impressive finds. The small broken points can tell you a lot about how people actually lived and worked the land, so they're worth paying attention to.

Right, because broken arrowheads are basically ancient hot rods.
