The difference 3 years of neglect makes on a maple

I drove past this big sugar maple on Elm Street in Denver every day for like 3 years and never really noticed it. Last week the city finally trimmed it and took out all the deadwood and crossing branches. Now you can actually see the structure underneath and it looks twice as healthy. Has anyone else had a client who just let a tree go for years and then finally paid for a proper pruning?

Wow, that's quite a transformation! I had a similar thing happen with a client's old oak in the backyard. They let it go for nearly five years with suckers everywhere and branches rubbing against each other. Once I got in there and cleaned it up, took out all the dead stuff and crossing limbs, the tree really opened up and looked a hundred times better. It's amazing how much neglect can hide the natural shape of a good tree.

Isn't a sugar maple a bit out of place in Denver's climate?

Yeah it'll probably struggle out here.
