Spent 3 years pruning flush cuts on maples before a client in Bend asked why her tree looked worse
I was cutting every branch right up against the trunk because it looked cleaner, and I honestly thought I was doing good work. She pulled up a photo from 2 years ago on her phone and the tree had way more leaves back then, which made me go home and read up on branch collars. Is there anyone else here who learned proper pruning from a client instead of a mentor?
That client in Bend did you a real favor, even if it stung at the time. My old crew chief never explained branch collars either, just told us to make it look tidy, so a homeowner with a before photo ended up teaching me more than two years on that crew did. It stinks that the tree had to lose leaves first, but you caught it before the whole thing died.
