PSA: I heard a city planner in Springfield say they want to plant only native species from now on.

He said it's for the local bugs and birds, which makes sense. But what about all the mature non-native trees that are doing fine, like the Norway maples in the old park? Do we just stop planting them, or even cut them down? Has your town made a rule like this?

Ugh, this feels like the whole "paper straws instead of plastic" debate all over again.

Consider the cost of NOT doing it. Saw a report where non-native trees can actually make an area MORE flammable because the local bugs and birds don't eat the dead leaves and twigs, so it all just piles up as dry fuel. Those Norway maples might be fine until a bad drought year.

Wow, saw the same thing with eucalyptus groves near me, total fire traps!
