Warning: I just read a stat about dryer fires that made me double-check my lint trap

I was looking at a safety report from the National Fire Protection Association yesterday, and it said dryer fires cause about 13,000 house fires a year. That number really got me, because most of those are from lint buildup. I always clean the trap, but it made me pull out the vacuum and get the hose behind the dryer too, which was way worse than I thought. How often do you guys actually pull the whole unit out to clean the vent line for customers?

Read that stat and immediately pulled my own dryer out. The vent hose was packed SOLID, like a gray felt tube. It's scary how fast that stuff builds up. So @grace_allen, when you say most people never clean it, that's exactly WHY the fires happen, right? It's a hidden problem until it's not. What would you say to someone who thinks yearly cleaning is too much after seeing that kind of buildup?

My neighbor's fire department did a demo last year where they showed a lint fire can go from a spark to full flames in under 90 seconds. They said the vent pipe itself needs cleaning at least once a year, not just the trap.

Cleaning the vent pipe every year seems like overkill. Most people never do it and their houses are fine.
