Shoutout to the old timer who fixed my Fisher Paykel ice maker issue

Had this customer in Portland with a fridge making weird noises for 3 months. I'd already swapped the water inlet valve and the main control board on two separate trips. Nothing worked. Finally called up a retired guy I know who used to run a repair shop in the 90s. He asked if I checked the ice maker harness connection behind the compressor cover. I felt pretty dumb when I pulled that cover off and found a wire barely hanging on. Crimped it back and the thing ran perfect. Saved me from ordering a $180 board I didn't need. Anyone else got a go-to tip from an older tech that bailed you out?

That Fisher Paykel ice maker harness is a classic trouble spot. When they route that wiring under the compressor cover it gets brittle from the heat and vibrations. I've seen those wires chafe right through on the metal edge of the cover plate. Old timers know to check those hidden connections first before swapping expensive parts. That wire harness is maybe a $25 part but a loose crimp is free to fix. Always check the path of the wiring before you condemn a board.

Ever seen one short the board out completely or just kill the ice maker?

Right? @evaallen nailed it with that harness thing. I swear those wires are DESIGNED to fail at the worst possible time. I had one where the insulation was so brittle it literally crumbled in my fingers when I touched it. Good reminder that sometimes the cheapest fix is just looking in the RIGHT spots first.
