Had a dryer heating element blow out mid-job yesterday

Was finishing up a belt replacement on a ten year old Whirlpool when the whole thing just went cold. Pulled the back panel and found the element had a clean break right in the middle, not just a bad connection. Had to run to the supply house for a new one, which set the repair back an hour. Anyone have a trick for testing those before you button everything up? I usually just check continuity.

It's always the last step that gets you (like a printer jamming right before a deadline). Continuity's the move, but a quick visual check for any weird spots on the element can save a second trip.

Ever try a quick heat test with a multimeter? I do a continuity check like @the_matthew said, but I also look for hot spots with an infrared temp gun after a short run. That caught a weak element for me once before it fully blew.
