Chatted with a 30 year tech about compressor starts yesterday
He told me I've been replacing start relays when it's actually the PTC thermistor failing 9 times out of 10 on those older Frigidaires, and now I'm second guessing every diagnosis I've done this month - anyone else had that hit to the gut?

I heard a tech say once that thermal sensors act up way more than people give them credit for on those models.

Act up" is putting it nicely, more like those sensors throw a full blown tantrum every time the temp drops below 40. Guess they just get dramatic when they're cold, just like me on a Monday morning. But hey, at least mine don't trigger a check engine light.

...and that's exactly what @emery_young13 is getting at. I had a similar wake-up call about five years back, a old-school fella named Pete who'd been doing this since the 70s. He pulled me aside after I'd swapped three start devices on a Whirlpool that kept acting up, and he just pointed at the thermistor and said "son, you're guessing, not diagnosing." I swapped it out and that machine ran like new for years. Makes you wonder how many times we've all been just a few cents shy of the real fix.
