Recycling pickup debate: did my sorted bins actually get dumped together?
I spent 6 months separating plastics and paper for the city's program, then watched the driver toss both into the same truck last Tuesday. Am I wasting my time sorting, or is that just the transfer station's setup and they split it later?
Honestly that "transfer station and they split it later" line is what my buddy Dave told himself for months too. He'd rinse every yogurt cup, flatten every box, the whole nine yards. Then one day he followed the truck to the dump and saw the same thing, all of it going into one big pile. Turns out their city just has a single-stream setup now and the sorting happens at the facility, but Dave still felt kinda dumb standing there in the rain watching his careful work get tossed around. Last I heard he just throws everything in one bin now and doesn't stress about it. Maybe ask your city's waste office what they actually do, cause it's different everywhere.
