Found out my ABQ water bill has a hidden fee for something I never signed up for, is this normal here?
Last week I was going through my Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility bill line by line and saw a $6.74 charge labeled '911 emergency communications surcharge' on there. I called the utility and they said it applies to all water accounts in the city, not just phones, which surprised me since I thought that fee was only for landlines and cells. Now I'm stuck between two views here. Some folks on Nextdoor say it's been on every bill for years and it funds a real service we all benefit from, so quit whining. Others say it's a quiet way to pad utility revenue and nobody ever voted on it. I checked my last 12 months and that adds up to about $81 a year I never knew about. So what's the real story with this charge, is it legit or should I be pushing back with the city?
