City garbage pickup versus the private haulers, who is actually cheaper?

I ran the numbers on my block in the Northeast Heights, city bulk pickup cost me about $40 in fees last spring for a couch and an old water heater, but one of those private guys quoted me $120 for the same haul. The city was slower by like two weeks, but it was way less hassle, has anyone else found the private services worth the extra cash for speed?.

You mentioned the city being "way less hassle" but that two week wait is a real cost too. If your couch is taking up half your garage or you're paying storage, that $80 difference disappears fast. Private guys also actually show up when they say they will. City pickup had my neighbor's stuff sitting curbside for a whole weekend because they rescheduled on them twice. That's not really cheaper if you count your time babysitting a pile of junk.
