Unpopular opinion: I think the 'always use a new wire run' rule for every sensor is overkill.
Last month in a 1920s brick house in Cincinnati, I reused an existing 22/4 run for a new door contact, but the old insulation failed and caused a ground fault that took me 3 hours to find with my meter, so what's your go-to method for testing old wire before you commit to using it?

Yeah the "always use a new run" rule is like that for a reason. I mean, I've been burned by old insulation too, it's never just one quick test. Now I just assume any wire that old is already on borrowed time.

Disagree with you there, Jess was right to double check.

Totally get what you mean about borrowed time. I had a 70s-era cloth wrapped wire in my attic that tested fine, so I left it. Two months later the insulation just crumbled when I bumped it with a new cable. You're right, it's never just one spot that's bad.
