TIL a customer's basement flood changed my whole install approach
I was installing a panel in a basement in Denver last spring when a pipe burst and soaked everything. It made me wonder - do you guys mount panels higher off the ground as a rule, or do you trust the customer to keep the area dry? Curious what others do after something like that.

Had a similar thing happen back in 2018. Customer's basement flooded from a backed up sewer line. I was just lucky the panel was already up about 8 inches off the ground. It got wet from the splash but the guts were fine. Now I always put them at least 12 inches up no matter what. The customer might swear their basement is dry but you never know. A little extra height costs nothing but saves a ton of headache later. Plus it makes it easier to fish wires in from below anyway.

Heard from a buddy in Omaha. He mounted a panel six inches off the ground. Customer's sump pump failed during a big storm. Water got three inches deep. Panel was totally fine. His phone blew up with calls from other homeowners wanting the same treatment.
