Saw a stat that kind of blew my mind about old panel lifespans

Was digging through some old manufacturer docs from the late 90s. Found a spec sheet saying the average life expectancy for a wired panel back then was around 12-15 years. Fast forward to now, I'm swapping out 30 year old panels that still boot up fine. Just did a job last week near Boston, a DSC 1616 from like 1995. Customer said it never had a single issue. Makes me wonder if the newer wireless stuff will even last half that. Anyone else noticing the older hardware just refuses to die?

Honestly I kind of disagree, I've seen just as many old panels that were dead or full of issues by the time they hit 15 years. The ones that survive are the exception not the rule.

Convertible to a combiner box is the way to go. Saves you from having to rewire everything when you inevitably need to swap a panel out.

My brother has a 12 year old panel in his garage that's still fine, he swapped in a new inverter last year and the combiner box made it so easy. But I hear you on the 15 year thing. It's like that with all electronics these days, they just don't build stuff to last like they used to. I've got a toaster from the 80s that still works perfect, but my parents go through a new one every few years. It's the same pattern with solar gear, you pay more upfront for something that might last or you get the cheap stuff and hope it holds up.
