PSA: stop telling new guys they need to upsell every single panel upgrade, it backfires on us
Two months ago in Mesa I lost a $1,400 job because the homeowner said our company felt pushy. A young installer I was training had just finished a basic swap and started quoting her a full smart panel buildout she never asked for. She went with a small shop that just did the swap and left a 5 star review saying they "didn't try to sell me the moon." I keep hearing vets say the upsell is where the money is, but in my area it costs us more repeat work than it brings in. How are you all training newer techs to read when a customer actually wants options versus when they just want their old box replaced?
Used to be all in on the upsell pitch until I watched it cost us a whole neighborhood of referrals. Now I tell my guys to shut up and listen first, if she asks about backup power or generators THEN you talk options. Nine times out of ten they just want the dang box swapped and to be left alone.
