PSA: An old man in a Denver apartment building taught me more about this job than any training video

About eight years back, I was installing a basic system in a brick building downtown (you know, the kind with those old, thick walls). The owner, Mr. Henderson, was maybe eighty and watched me the whole time. When I was fishing wire, he just said, 'You're not just putting in a beeper, son. You're giving a nervous old man a good night's sleep.' That stuck with me. It shifted my focus from just getting the sensors right to really thinking about the peace of mind part. Anyone else have a customer moment that changed how you approach an install?

That's a nice story, but honestly, the job is about the system working right. Peace of mind comes from a perfect signal test and a clean panel log, not a chat. If the sensors are placed wrong, all the good feelings in the world won't stop a break-in.

I had a lady in a small house on Elm Street who was terrified of carbon monoxide. She showed me the battery powered detector she kept moving from room to room. When I put in the hardwired units, she just kept saying "they'll be there." Now I always take an extra minute to explain how the permanent power works. It's not just a test, it's about showing them the safety is always on.

Hardwired ones need battery backups too.
