My boss told me to always use a 3/8 inch drill bit for sensor mounts

He said it was the perfect size for the screws we use and would never strip. I followed that for years until a job in Austin last month where the old plaster walls just crumbled. Had to switch to a smaller bit and toggle bolts to get a solid hold. What's your go-to method for tricky wall materials?

Honestly, sticking with one bit size sounds like a recipe for trouble. You gotta check the actual wall before you drill.

Used to just grab whatever bit was handy. Ruined a perfectly good wall once and learned that lesson fast.

My dad always said to start small and work up... saved me from a few disasters. He drilled into me that guessing is how you make a big mess. Now I keep a whole set of bits in a little box.
