I installed a basic system for a client in Phoenix and saw a huge drop in false alarms after 6 months

They used to get 3-4 false alarms a month from their old setup, mostly from pets and loose sensors. I put in a new panel with better pet-immunity tech and did a full walk-test with the homeowner. Now they've had zero false alarms since the install, which makes me think we rely too much on old sensor tech. What's the oldest piece of gear you still install that you know you should probably stop using?

You say we rely too much on old sensor tech, but that's exactly why I still use some of it. Those old PIR motion sensors from the 90s? They're built like tanks and super simple. I've seen them work fine for 20 years in a dry closet. Newer stuff with all the fancy chips fails way sooner sometimes. If it's a basic job with no pets, why fix what isn't broken?

My shop still has a box of those old Ademco 5890 door contacts from the 80s. I keep telling myself they're for emergencies, but really I'm just too cheap to throw away a perfectly good piece of brass. They're basically doorbell buttons at this point.

Read an article about those old sensors having trouble with new LED lights.
