Had a customer in Springfield tell me their old system was fine because 'the keypad still lit up' after a lightning strike fried the main board.

I mean, it took me an hour to explain that a glowing keypad doesn't mean the motion sensors or dialer are still working, so what's the weirdest thing a homeowner has insisted was still functional on a clearly dead system?

Ever had someone swear their security camera worked because the little red power light was on?

I see what paige86 is saying about the snowstorm thing, but honestly I think ppl overcomplicate this. If the little red light is on, it's on, maybe just needs a reset or the wifi dropped. Not every glitch is gonna end with a car stuck in a blizzard.

My neighbor argued his garage door opener worked fine because the wall button still clicked. The big motor unit was completely silent and full of water damage. I used to just shrug at stuff like that, but seeing his car stuck inside during a snowstorm changed my mind. Now I get why you need the whole system checked, not just the part that makes a noise or lights up. That hour you spent explaining is probably going to save that person a lot of trouble later.
