Almost wired a panel hot last Tuesday because the breaker wasn't labeled
Last Tuesday I was swapping an old panel in a rental over on Fremont and the homeowner swore the main was off, but nobody had labeled the sub panel when the basement got finished 6 years back. I went to pull the hot leg and my tester lit up, so I stopped and killed the whole service at the meter instead. Turns out a sump pump circuit was backfeeding from a different panel they didn't even know they had. Cost me 40 minutes and a return trip but I'd rather that than a burn. How are you all handling unlabeled subs on older homes, do you just meter everything or make the homeowner trace it?
That line about the sump pump backfeeding from a panel they didn't even know about gave me chills, man. I hit the same thing on a flip last year where some guy had tied a shed sub off the garage years back and never told anyone, and my tester saved me the same way yours did. Now I meter every single wire before I touch it, no matter what the homeowner swears, because 40 minutes beats a funeral every time.
