Spent 9 hours on a fuel tank reseal at BFI last Tuesday and found the leak was a loose sender gasket
So last Tuesday I drew the short straw on a 172 fuel tank reseal at BFI, and I was in that wing for 9 hours. Pulled the tank, cleaned every inch with MEK, laid fresh sealant, let it cure, pressure tested it, and she still wept fuel out of the bottom seam. I'm sitting there at 7pm with sealant all over my forearms and my back screaming, cussing out every engineer who ever designed a bladder tank. My lead comes over, looks at it for about 30 seconds, and says real quiet, "Did you check the sender gasket?" Sure enough, that little cork gasket was cracked and seeping the whole time. I felt about two inches tall. All that reseal work was probably fine and I just chased the wrong leak. Now I pressure test the sender port FIRST before I even touch the tank. Anyone else ever burn a full shift on the wrong end of a fuel leak?
