Hot take: my sister swore dumping a cup of water in the air fryer basket would steam my rolls, and she was dead wrong
My sister has been on me for months to try her trick for frozen dinner rolls, which is pouring a full cup of water straight into the basket before you start it. She does this at her place in Tucson and swears it makes them fluffy like a bakery roll. So two weeks ago I tried it on a batch of six Rhodes rolls at 320 degrees, and by minute eight the basket had a quarter inch of hot water sloshing around with the rolls sitting in it. The bottoms came out gray and gummy while the tops dried into little rocks. I poked one with a thermometer and the middle was still 90 degrees after the full 15 minutes, which is basically raw dough sitting in a puddle. The fix that actually works is a small oven safe dish with 2 tablespoons of water on the rack under the basket, or just brushing the tops with butter and covering with foil for the first 10 minutes. So who else got talked into the water in the basket thing, and did yours ever come out right or did you toss the whole batch like I did?
