Why does nobody talk about using a real lawyer versus those online template sites?

We used LegalZoom for our agency's operating agreement last year to save cash, maybe $500 total. Then we got into a real dispute with a client over scope creep and that generic contract was useless, no real protection. Hired a local firm in Austin for a full review and rewrite, cost about $2k. The new terms on change orders and kill fees are so specific, it's already saved us from two bad situations. Anyone else switch from DIY legal docs and actually see it pay off fast?

Yeah, that "generic contract was useless" line hits hard. My buddy's startup got burned the same way with a template privacy policy. The cheap fix cost way more later.

Templates are basically just fancy paperweights when things get messy. You're paying for the lawyer's brain to spot the problems you don't even know to look for.

Templates can be a decent starting point for simple things, but they're not a replacement for legal advice. The real issue is when people think a downloaded form covers all their bases. A lawyer's job is to ask the questions you wouldn't even consider, which templates just can't do. It's like using a band-aid when you actually need stitches.
