Vent: I was writing client contracts in plain text files for almost a year before a lawyer friend saw one and just said 'You're not protected at all.'

Read a story about a freelancer who lost thousands because their text file didn't mention late payments. The client just stopped paying and there was no contract clause about it. Plain text is fine for notes, but a real contract needs the scary legal words that cover what happens when things go wrong. Like, what if they don't pay, or they sue you for something that wasn't your fault? Your lawyer friend did you a huge favor.

Totally agree with @robin_henderson81, free templates saved me.

Right, but what happens when a free template misses something big? Like @robin_henderson81 said, it's the scary stuff that matters most. A missing clause can leave you totally stuck if a client just ghosts on a payment.
