PSA: My old client contract was a joke compared to what I write now

Back in 2022 I used to copy-paste contracts from random templates I found online. One client for a $5k branding project in Chicago literally owned all the work forever because I forgot to add a usage clause. Total rookie move. Now I write my own scope of work with clear limits like 2 rounds of revisions and a kill fee for early termination. The funny thing is I learned the hard way when a client tried to resell my designs to their sister company for free. Anyone else have a contract horror story that made you rewrite everything?

Oh I heard a freelancer say they paid a lawyer $200 to review their contract and it saved them thousands later.

Spent $300 on a lawyer to rewrite my contract after a client tried to claim they owned my process notes and sketches too. The lawyer told me "intellectual property" doesn't mean what most creators think it means, and that really stuck with me. It's wild how people treat contracts like they're just for big corporations when really they protect both sides from confusion. I've noticed the same thing happens in everyday life with things like friendship boundaries or favor requests. People skip the clear setup, assume everyone's on the same page, then act shocked when things fall apart.
