In-house counsel vs freelance lawyer for my small agency, night and day difference
Ran a 5 person shop in Austin for 3 years using a big law firm for everything. Paid $850 an hour for contract reviews and they always had a 4 day turnaround. Finally switched to a freelance lawyer who used to work in agencies. She charges $250 flat for most stuff and replies same day. Her markup suggestions actually make sense for our clients instead of boilerplate corporate stuff. Has anyone else made this swap? Was the cost difference worth it for you?

...and the part that really got overlooked here is what happens when something actually goes sideways. With big firms you get this shield of process, they bill you for the privilege of their risk management system. But that flat fee freelancer, she has to be right because her whole reputation rides on it. Nobody talks about how much faster you move when your lawyer actually understands the business model, not just the law. That 4 day turnaround was probably costing you more in missed deadlines than the hourly rate ever did.
