I thought my client's 'handshake deal' story was a joke until I saw the contract

Honestly, a new client came in last week saying his old marketing guy did a bunch of work on just a verbal agreement. I was sure he was about to get burned. He showed me the actual contract they finally drew up, and it had a clause about 'good faith efforts' covering work done before signing. It was totally legit and protected him. Has anyone else seen a contract that fixed a mess from before the ink was dry?

Yeah, that's a risky move to count on. I've seen the opposite happen way more often. A friend did some web design work on a handshake deal, and when they finally got a contract, it only covered future work. He never got paid for the initial setup because there was no paper trail. Those "good faith" clauses are rare in my experience. Most businesses want to wipe the slate clean when they put things in writing.

Sounds about right, sadly.

But what about the emails and texts showing the work was done? Doesn't that count as a paper trail?

My neighbor's fence got built like that, half before the contract.
