Client redlined our retainer so hard we had to rewrite our whole MSA

Last month a client came back with 40 changes to our standard retainer, including a clause that would've made us liable for their missed deadlines. We ended up cutting our liability cap from $250k down to $50k just to keep the deal, but now I'm second-guessing if we gave away too much. Has anyone else had to gut their contract to close a big account, and how do you know where the line is?
