Rant: the vet tech in Austin scared me straight about my rescue beagle's teeth
The vet tech at my clinic on South Lamar pulled me aside after my beagle Ollie's checkup and asked how often I brush his teeth, and when I said maybe twice a month she gave me a look I won't forget. She explained that by age 3 most rescue dogs already have some gum disease and that dental cleanings under anesthesia run $600 to $900, which hit hard since I adopted him thinking the shelter checkup covered everything. How often are you all actually brushing your adopted dogs' teeth, and did anyone else get this wake up call way too late?
Who actually brushes their dog's teeth every day? I adopted a 4 year old mutt and his breath could knock you over, so I started doing it maybe 3 times a week with those finger brush things from the pet store. Six months later he still needed a $700 cleaning and they pulled two teeth. The "twice a month" thing is fake comfort, it's more like if you can't commit to several times a week, just start saving now for the vet bill.
