Am I the only one who thinks the Geico gecko got way less funny after 2015?
I was rewatching an old commercial block from 2012 on YouTube and the Geico gecko had this dry, sarcastic vibe where he barely talked and the jokes landed. Then I pulled up a 2021 ad and he is doing full paragraphs, dancing, and smiling at the camera like a morning show host. The voice actor changed around 2016 and the writing got softer, more explain-y, and way less weird. In 2012 the gag was him being annoyed at humans, now he is basically a friendly tour guide for insurance tips. Some folks say the friendlier version sells better because it feels warm and safe, but I think the weird edge was the whole point. Which era of the gecko actually made you laugh, the grumpy one or the cheerful one?
