Vent: the gas station screen screamed at me at 6am and I just stood there

I was pumping gas in Ypsilanti before work when the little screen blasted a video ad with the volume stuck on max, so I mashed the mute button and it just skipped to a louder one. I ended up holding my hand over the speaker while the pump ran, which looked ridiculous to the guy at the next stall. Does anyone know if those mute buttons actually work or is it all fake?
