The 'Where's the Beef' lady passed 40 years ago and that ad still holds up better than anything on my screen now
I was reading a thing about Clara Peller at the barber shop on 5th and the guy next to me said nobody remembers her name, just the line. That got me thinking about how ads back in the 80s actually had a punchline you could repeat, while now I can't recall a single one after watching a full football game. Maybe it's because everything is cut to 6 seconds and shot for a phone now. What older ad line do you still catch yourself saying?
Man that hits hard because you're right, nobody under 50 knows her actual name but everybody knows the line. I still catch myself saying "where's the beef" when someone's plate looks light, and my dad says "I've fallen and I can't get up" way too often for it to be funny anymore. Feels like old ads worked because they told a tiny story with a payoff, and now it's just quick cuts and loud music with no words you can hang onto. Half the time I can't even tell what the commercial was selling by the end of it. You're not wrong that the 6 second phone format killed the punchline, there's just no room for a joke to land in that window.
